Prop Up Your Presentation!

We’ve been doing it all our lives!

  • Show and Tell in Grade School.

  • An object lesson presentation in High School speech class.

  • The product demonstration for a client.

We’ve been using physical props to convey ideas to others.  Why not do the same thing in your virtual presentation?

The object helps people to focus, understand, and remember what you have communicated.

Use a prop while you talk, rather than snagging one more photo to plaster on your powerpoint slide. Trust me, the moment you hold something up in line of the camera, your audience will lean in, take a closer look, and will listen more intently to what you are saying.

— If you’re helping to simplify a complex issue and you’re tempted to say “This isn’t brain surgery” — hold up a model of the human mind.
— If you’re pitching an idea that could save your client a significant amount of money on their next bill — pick up a pair of scissors and cut an old invoice in half while you explain the benefits.
— How about holding a pair of shoes in your hands while you explain what you discovered about the company’s commitment to service by “walking in our customers shoes” during the last week?

Using a physical prop can make your topic relatable and memorable.

The physical prop is not the focus for the whole presentation. It is only a brief visual prompt that you bring into view so that the audience can be drawn into your world or pulled back from their own physical distractions that exist in their location.

Get creative and get their attention.
